A rough early version I created for a pitch to win some work. The concept was to illustrate ink being raised to reveal previously censored text. This is the closeup shot to the sequence.
I created the liquid simulation using Nextlimit’s Realflow and imported the mesh into Maya for final rendering. I had to take scale into account to help me get the very thin tendrils of the ink. Using Vray and the standard Vray Material I created the black ink shader using the Fog attribute. This allowed me to get the thickness based refraction of the ink to come through and be semi transparent the thinner the ink became. I rendered various render passes out for this project including reflection, refraction, z-depth, AO and shadow.
